The Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California placed at No. 3 in the QS World University Rankings of the best online MBA programs across global for 2019 and at No.1 among U.S. business schools. QS, an international career and education network, based its list of 40 online MBAs on the following criteria:

Student Profile (35%), including the number of individuals enrolled, their average work experience and diversity of gender and nationality

Employability (30%) of graduates, according to an international survey of employers

Faculty and Teaching (30%), including the ratio of full-time faculty to enrolled students, the academic reputation of instructors and the degree completion rate

Class Experience (5%), accounting for factors like live classes and discussion sessions, in-person meetups, access to class portals through mobile devices and the availability of tech support

USC Marshall ranked above all the other programs evaluated by QS in the category of class experience, receiving a perfect score. The Marshall Online MBA experience starts with a weeklong on-campus residency when the members of each small, selective cohort work together to solve real business problems. Classes of experienced professionals network with each other and meet their instructors in person.

The first course also lays the foundation for the rest of the program as students team up to complete a long-term capstone project. Throughout their time in the program, classmates use online meetings and instant messaging apps to stay in touch and help one another. These relationships are one reason why the Online MBA achieved the near-100% degree completion rate noted by QS. A 2019 graduate, financial advisor Raymond Scannell, noted how much his conversations with peers meant to him.

“As students, we stay in contact with each other via WhatsApp daily,” he said. “This messaging platform helps us to provide academic support to our peers while also creating an incredible bond between all of us. My peers come from all parts of the world and bring a diverse blend of knowledge that I don’t think can be duplicated with an on-campus program.”

The Online MBA features extensive opportunities to interact directly with full-time faculty members, going beyond what’s possible even in many on-ground programs. Marshall’s integrated curriculum is taught by scholars, educators and entrepreneurs with a wide range of specializations like management and organization, data science and finance. In team-taught courses, instructors collaborate to offer multidisciplinary insights through a combination of live class sessions, online office hours and self-paced activities.

Academic Director Miriam Burgos explained that the close connections students form with their instructors is a key aspect that sets Marshall’s Online MBA apart from other distance learning programs.

“The faculty takes such an active role in the students’ learning,” she said. “They don’t just arrive for class, teach, and then they’re gone until you see them again next week. They are in constant contact with the students through our learning management system, giving feedback and reaching out personally.”

In addition, monthly guest speakers converse both online and on-campus students through conferencing software. Leaders from a variety of industries discuss the latest business developments and answer questions from attendees. These events are a chance for individuals from multiple departments to meet up and engage with the latest thinking on emerging business challenges and opportunities.

The Marshall Online MBA’s focus on developing in-demand skills and enabling student success have catapulted the program to the forefront of online business education since its founding in 2015. The recognition from QS World University Rankings is just the latest in a torrent of acclaim: Poets & Quants named Marshall the No. 1 online MBA in the nation for 2019, and the program reached the top three in rankings from Princeton Review and the top five in U.S. News & World Report.
